I decided to do something I’ve been putting off for a long time. That something is Swimming. I never learned how to swim. I found out through the local college catalog, they offered swimming lessons that were very reasonable and with great swimming instructors. The fear of drowning and procrastination are  reasons for my  not learning  to swim. So far, there are 2 people in my family who have drowned and 1 missed drowning, which has given me the motivation to at least encourage my grandchildren to learn to swim. My daughter learned years ago and is like a fish in the water. I figure if she learned how to swim, she would save me if I happened to get in a drowning situation. Today, I don’t know if I can depend on that.  She’s not with me that much since becoming an adult. I believe it is important that everyone, at one time in their life or another,  learn to swim as well as learning CPR. You just never know when you’ll need to use it. Check your local college for swimming courses they offer and your local community recreation department.  You might be surprise of the types of programs they  offer. All of my grandchildren are now signed up for the next swimming lesson session. It’s a great opportunity to do this now because, it seems funding is being cut everywhere for recreational activities in the communities and in the schools.  So, don’t wait for the summer to get a rolling with your swimming lessons. Swimming will help you limber up  joints, build muscles and increase your over-all stamina. Swimming  helped me to expand my breathing capacity as well.  I never knew it was so much fun, too!  You will need goggles so that you can see under water without the chlorine irritating your eyes.  I finally get to use the new swimming suits I purchased at the end of last summer!  It is important to note that statistic show that black children have a higher risk drowning than any other race of people. Reasons being is the accessibility of a pool and the lack of money  for lessons.   Then again,  with some parents,  swimming lessons just never entered their mind, because of the focus of other sports, like basketball, football, soccer, and baseball.  It is not a bad idea to put a little money away for your child to take swimming lessons and other sports interest they may have no matter what race they are.   Feel good and look good, swimming.  By Thelma Harcum
